Want to Learn the Thai Alphabet in Under 3-hours?

We've heard most of the excuses before:

"It's too difficult."

"Thai is too complicated. You'll never be able to do it."

"You need to have a special knack for learning languages to learn Thai."

"I don't have the time."

They're wrong, of course (we'll prove that to you in a while).

But I do get where they're coming from...

It's a completely different language and alphabet and there are zero similarities with English.

We Understand How It Might Look Daunting

But it reminds me of I remember my most hated subject at school - maths.

In particular, equations and formula. I just couldn't get them.

I still remember, "Equations need to be balanced. What you do to 1 side, you must do to the other..."

It didn't matter.

I didn't have a clue.

Despite the teacher's efforts I made zero progress.

A Different Teacher Made ALL The Difference

It took something as simple as a flu bug.

Our maths teacher was away sick and we had a stand-in teacher.

With me sitting their frustrated, he asked me what was wrong.

"I don't get this." (but think about it as being said by a pain-in-the-backside stroppy teenager!)

"Get what?" he said.

"This."

"Right, show me what you don't get..."

So I did.

"Ah, I see," said he, "I see where you're going wrong. Let me explain..."

30 minutes later!

"Bam!' - Job Done

That was it.

I never struggled again ( I went from a 'D' grade in mathematics to a 'B' grade)

So maybe, just MAYBE...

If You're Struggling, It Could Be the Way You've Been Taught...

That's why we're convinced our system can help you.

Your colour code and picture aids make learning so much easier and it’s so easy to refresh my memory from your app. I must say Russ, for me your product has been a great help, well worth the small price paid, and, would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn to read and write Thai.”

“Well, I agree that your app and those posts are like a speed-of-light catalyst in terms teaching one the Thai script and reading it within literally two days (in my experience) which I find extraordinary."

Emiliusz Smorczewski

"I can't wait to start using it as your explanations and memory aids are the best that I have seen. I have a few books that have helped me to learn to speak Thai but their explanations of the written language always left me confused."

"I'd like to give you kudos for your well though out system for learning Thai. I purchased the hardcopy of the first book in the Quest program, and I like how you "decode" the inter-mechanics of the Thai language.

I'm a self-proclaimed polyglot in training, and I've learned several languages via different systems. I have to say that your method is top-notch."

It's clear that it doesn't need to be complicated.

Getting to Grips With The Thai Alphabet

If you're new to learning Thai, you might wonder what all the aggro is about.

To all be on the same page, let's have a quick run-down on the Thai alphabet.

  • There are 44 consonants - each of which makes 1 or more sound (based on various factors)
  • There are 32 vowels - these only make 1 sound (each), so are much easier to learn.

That's pretty much it, but there are a couple of other considerations to note:

  • Thai is a tonal language - every syllable in every word has a tone and you need to be able to calculate this (there are specific rules for doing this). One part of this is what's called a consonant class. There are 3 of them in the Thai language (High class, Middle Class, and Low class). Every consonant (all 44 of them) belongs to 1 of these classes. So you have to learn the consonant class as well as the sound(s) and shapes.*
  • Just to complete the mix, there are also a few items of punctuation and other marks to learn as part of this. They're not strictly the alphabet, but we might as well do them all. When we're ready for them that is.

* Vowels don't have classes, only consonants.

You need to be able to learn and remember all of these (to go on to reading Thai, that is).

Again, it doesn't need to take long.

It's also a fact that...

Many Struggle Because of the Way It's Taught

So let me show you how we do it...

We use simple pictures with easy to remember names...

Pictures and names that tell you everything that you need to know about what sound (or sounds) the letter makes...

A Single Word Picture Name = 1 Sound

We call this image Kangaroo.

When we superimpose the Thai consonant over it you can see the consonant's shape conforms to the image:

The image name (Kangaroo) has a highlighted letter.

This is the sound this consonant makes:

/k/ as in kangaroo.

Simple, right?

But, as it's a consonant, it also needs a consonant class.

These are either:

  • High class
  • Middle class
  • Low Class

The image to the right shows the simple way to remember them:

We then add the corresponding colour as our background:

Now, whenever you see the Thai consonant (ข):

Think:

"Kangaroo, red background = /k/ + High Class consonant".

Pictures With 2-word Names

Where consonants make more than 1 sound, they have pictures with 2-word names, e.g.

This consonant (ย):

...is called Yet Ice:

  • The 1st highlighted letter is the sound the consonant makes when it's an initial consonant (the 1st consonant in a syllable or word) - /y/
  • The 2nd highlighted letter is the sound it makes when it's in the final or terminal consonant position (the last consonant in a syllable or word) - /i/
  • The green background tells us that this consonant is a Low Class consonant.

Can you see how easy this is?
